Iceland packing list
Iceland's weather changes fast — pack for all four seasons in a single day. These are the non-negotiables:
Clothing (all seasons)
- Waterproof shell jacket (wind + rain protection is essential — every day)
- Waterproof trousers or over-trousers
- Thermal base layer (merino wool preferred)
- Mid-layer fleece or down jacket
- Warm hat, gloves and neck gaiter (even in summer evenings)
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
Geothermal lagoons & pools
- Swimwear (mandatory for Blue Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Mývatn Nature Baths and every public pool)
- Flip-flops or pool sandals
- Quick-dry towel
Summer extras (late May–mid July)
- Eye mask / sleep mask (midnight sun means 24 h daylight — hotel curtains often inadequate)
- Sunscreen and sunglasses (UV reflection off glaciers and snow)
- Light layers instead of heavy insulation
Winter extras (Nov–Mar)
- Crampons or micro-spikes (icy pavements; many tours provide them — confirm before booking)
- Hand warmers
- Head torch (only 4–6 h of daylight in December)
Practical essentials
- Reusable water bottle (tap water is glacier-fresh — no need to buy bottled)
- Contactless/chip card (Iceland is near-cashless; carry a card, not cash)
- Power adapter (UK-style 2-pin F / Type C sockets, 230 V)
- Download the Veður app (Iceland Met Office) for real-time weather
